FROU FROU by Jolanta Gazda

The FROU FROU label was created by Jolanta Gazda: a would-be mathematician, a costume-designer and a make-up artist on leave and a seeker of eye-catching forms in jewelry. Jolanta Gazda learned the goldsmithing trade in Warsaw-based Wytwórnia Antidotum under the eye of renowned specialists. She is a member of Goldsmithing Artist’s Association and KLIMT02 which unites jewelry designers from around the globe.

The concept of Frou-Frou jewellery is based on crocheting technique. Every single element is hand-made, prepared from scratch, woven out of dozens (often even hundreds) of meters of silver wire. In her work she is trying to modernize folk handicraft forms by rearranging their colourful thread into noble metal. In all Frou-Frou designs Jolanta is looking for their pure delicacy and ethereal transparency.

She likes to imagine that the space closed by the wire is the real, essential piece of jewellery (and not the wire tangle itself). So, Frou-Frou is exactly the kind of play. Judging a piece we should always have the dilemma: we are looking at the solid matter or just some air forms. The interaction between “something” and “nothing” is always fundamental here.

Jolanta is inspired by nature on a micro-level. She likes to see the world through the microscope’s lenses. Human cells, viruses, bacteria, whose elements form complicated dimensional structures; molecular systems, seemingly chaotic, are in the end encompassed by mathematical order.
